Vegan Girl Talk
Today is Monday and time for Vegan Girl Talk, so grab yourself a nice cup of tea (mine is organic, fairtrade green chai tea) and get ready for some good ole’ girl chat.
First off, I want to start by saying that there was a Crocodile Hunter marathon on the animal planet this weekend in tribute to Steve Irwin. It saddened to think of his being gone. What saddens me more is the people who have been inflicting revenge killings on stingray. Steve Irwin was a lover of animals and had great respect for all animals, he would not have wanted people to harm these stingray.
I don’t know if anyone picked up a copy of Redbook magazine this month, but Alicia Silverstone was featured on the cover. She looked great in a pair of 7 for all mankind jeans and a shirt by Mint. I was a bit disappointed that she didn’t opt for organic jeans, which are much kinder to the environment (think Loomstate), but she looked great and was outspoken about being an animal activist. She comes from a family of vegans/vegetarians and works hard to spread the word about what a healthy lifestyle this is. I did think it was kind of strange that she referred to her brother as a “hardcore” vegan. What does everyone else think? Is there a difference between being a vegan and a “hardcore” vegan. I am happy to see that she has some new projects in the works. She is working on a new film right now.
This is a bit of old news, that is still worth mentioning. Back in March of this year, Paul McCartney had his 2006 Cadillac CTS auctioned off. The car was custom made by General Motors and was completely vegan. How cool is that? The proceeds from the sale went to Adopt-A-Minefield, an organization that supports minefield clearance.
Speaking of McCartney, I would like to take the opportunity to talk a little about Stella McCartney, famous fashion designer. McCartney’s original intentions were to combine design talents with a commitment to cruelty-free fashion and a refusal to work with fur or leather. I am disappointed to find her commitment waning, though I do commend her for her vegan line of tennis made in conjunction with Adidas. Stella McCartney now creates lines of shoes and purses out of leather. She even has a purse made of pattent leather with “ecological” (aka fake) fur. Saving the skin of one animal, but not another. I give great kudos to traditional companies, that are beginning to offer vegan lines, but am less impressed with animal rights crusader’s who begin to offer leather lines.
I read a great article about how many mainstream companies are beginning to use faux leather in many of their new product lines. For more info, check it Textile Reference Gallery.
Rumor has it that makeup for this fall season is going to be very natural, with bold lips. I really like this look. Make-up that enhances the natural beauty of a woman’s face, with the one highlighted feature. Shimmer is out, matte is in. No more shiny, sparkling looks for this season. Break out the compact powder. For an all natural compact, with no animal products or no animal testing try Dr. Hauschka Translucent Face Powder, made of organic plant ingredients.
One final little tidbit . . . Last night I watched Entourage on HBO. I truly love this show. Adrian Grenier is so hot. Anyway, Vince (aka, Grenier) was dating a vegan. It was great to see some of the stereotyping that vegan’s have to deal with, as well as some of the discrimination.
I will leave you with a perfect shoe for the upcoming fall season:
