Vegan Girl Talk
Sorry I didn’t post my Monday Vegan Girl Talk yesterday. I had a big project I was working on for work and it definitely kept me busy yesterday. Anyway, I will be posting Vegan Girl Talk today.
Let me start with a final comment on the skinny model controversy. This will be my last post on the topic for a while, but I came across an article the other day that expressed my sentiment perfectly on this discussion entitled The skinny on fashion scene: Regular-size girls shape trends. Many designers state that they use skinny models because they designs hang better on them. The problem is most people buying these clothes are not a size 00, so why aren’t the designers making their designs to hang nicely on the average person who will be purchasing their designs? Definitely food for thought. I for one, want to purchase clothes that hang nicely on me, not clothes that hang nicely on some overly thin supermodel. What happened to the beautiful supermodels anyway? Did they all disappear.
Okay, moving on. I am very excited to learn that Ralph Lauren, J Crew, and Forever 21 have all taken a pledge to go fur free in their designs. Kudos to these designers for concerns over animal cruelty.
This month is breast cancer awareness month and many designers have designed special items to promote awareness and assist in raising funds for research. So I want to dedicated this post to a discussion of breast cancer awarenes and some very fashionable items you can purchase that will help in the campaign to fight breast cancer and increase awareness.
I don’t think that it can be said enough, but the best way to decrease risk of serious illness from breast cancer is to give yourself monthly exams. These exams can help you detect any lumps are abnormalities early on to prevent the cancer from spreading. Breast cancer is moderately aggressive cancer that can spread quickly to the lymph system and other parts of the body. This is why it is so important to detect breast cancer in the early stages before it spreads. When localized, breast cancer treatment outcomes are much more promising. Here are some startling facts about breast cancer reported by the Stanford University Comprehensive Cancer Center. Approximatley 3 million women in the United States are currently living with breast cancer. Of those approximately 216,000 have invasive breast cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the breasts). The chances of getting breast cancer are 1 out of 228 in women 0-39 years of age, 1 out of 24 in women 40-59, 1 out of 14 in women 60-79, and 1 out of 8 during the course of ones lifetime. This is the reason it is so important for women to perform their monthly exams by feeling around the entire breast in a circular motion to check for lumps. Lay with one arm behind your head, use the hand from the opposite arm to check the breast that corresponds with the arm behind your head. Make sure to lightly squeeze the nipple to make sure there is no excessive pain or fluid discharge. If you detect a lump, pain or discharge please contact your physician immediately to make an appointment.
What are some things that you can do to decrease your risk of breast cancer? The big thing is to reduce as many risk factors as possible that are within your control. First, STOP SMOKING. This significantly increases a women’s risk for breast cancer. Have children before the age of thirty and breast feed. Both of these have been associated with decreased risks of breat cancer. Maintain a healthy weight and eat a healthy lowfat diet. Being overweight and consuming a high fat diet are associated with increased risk. Find alternatives to oral contraceptives and try not to use hormonal therapies if possible during menopause. Finally, keep physically active and keep alcohol consumption to a minimum.
