Beautiful Fair Trade Sari Bags and Totes
First, I need to start this post off with a retraction. It appears that the Baby Phat coat with Faux Fur Trim that I featured in My Fur is Dead post is not indeed vegan. Apparently Baby Phat got their “Faux” fur from an Asian manufacturer who has been selling dog fur as “faux.” This is totally disgusting and sad. Apparently Baby Phat is not the only company to be dubbed with this horrific dog fur being passed off as faux fur. This has become a real problem. Therefore we will no longer post anything faux fur unless it has received the Peta and Human Society seal of approval. I am very disheartened to learn about these unscrupulous companies.
As I have been out and about in the blogosphere yesterday and today, I read many comments about people being disheartened that a lot of vegan fashion isn’t necessarily “cruelty-free” or environmentally friendly. Which we vegans struggle with. “Cruelty-free” also must encompass human rights and treatment, and a lot of cheap vegan fashion is made in sweatshops in third world countries. The emphasis is on cheap, but this is the case with all cheap fashion. This is why buying quality is definitely more in line with “cruelty-free” than buying a ton of cheap quantity. Many, but not all, highend designers use professional seamstresses who are definitely paid fair wages to sew their clothing. Another way to ensure that your clothing and accessories are cruelty-free is to buy fairtrade. Vegan Fashion Blog will be featuring fair trade and sustainable fashion over the next couple of weeks to show that fashion can be vegan and “cruelty-free.”
So today I bring to you some beautiful fair trade purses that have been designed in third world countries, using recycled materials, and the women making them are receiving a fair wage, as well as benefitting from special services provided to them from the profits.
Here is a little about the story behind these fabulous bags: Years ago, a small family near Delhi, India asked for sari donations and recycled them to make these beautiful bags. Today, many families have united to design and create these purses as well as develop a cooperative community and help support their families. Each bag is then embroidered to highlight and accentuate the natural feel and weave of the sari.
I hope you enjoy these purses, because I certainly do.

This Colorful Fair Trade Sari Patch Bag is my absolute favorite of the bunch. I love the fune use of color with the black contrast.

I love this Brown Sari Tote. It is neutral enough to go with anything. I might consider carrying this one as a purse replacement. I love the design and colors.

This Embroidered Sari Tote Bag is so beautifully designed and the magnetic closure will help keep you belongings safe and sound.
I am not exactly sure that I would use these bags as purses, but they would be perfect as an overnight tote and to take shopping to use as your purchase bags, as opposed to getting paper or plastic retail bags. How stylish would you be caring these with your purchases, as opposed to plain paper bags.
