Is Amway Cruelty-free and Vegan?

American Way (Amway) is a multi-level marketing organization that sells beauty, home care, and health products. The company was founded in 1959.

It is located in Ada, Michigan, in the United States and was founded by Richard DeVos and Jay Van Andel. The company has over 16000 employees and has its products marketed worldwide. Their parent company is Alticor.

Is Amway Cruelty-free?

No, Amway is not cruelty-free. In the past, customers had no way of telling whether a product is cruelty-free or not.

They relied on official statements from the brands, and most of the time, these were few; some were inaccurate, and others were just unknown.

That is not the case today. For a product to be cruelty-free, there are some criteria they should satisfy first.

The following are the mentioned criteria which we will analyze:

• None of the products should be tested on animals
• The company should not test on animals even if the law requires them to
• None of their products should be sold in China
• The ingredients should not contain any form of animal products
• They should not allow third-parties to test their products on their behalf

After looking into Amway, we concluded that the brand sells its products in China, and some of their products actually contained animal derived ingredients.

Are Amway products tested on Animals?

Yes, Amway products are sold in China. This usually means that their products are tested on animals. The People’s Republic of China has strict laws regarding cosmetics.

All cosmetic products must be tested on animals before being released to the public to ensure they are safe for humans.

Even after passing the compulsory test, the Chinese authorities can still pull these products from the shelves and have them tested again.

Most companies that sell their products in China are not cruelty-free for this reason. Some companies, however, refuse to sell their products in China due to their cruelty to animals. Unfortunately, Amway is not one of them.

Does Amway have any Cruelty-free Certifications?

We highly doubt they do. We searched for them on PETA, but we did not find their name on the cruelty-free list. It is highly unlikely that they are certified by any official animal rights organization like PETA or Leaping Bunny.

Yes, Amway has a parent company named Alticor. Alticor is a privately owned company founded by Jay Van Andel and Richard DeVos.

It is headquartered in Michigan and was founded in 1959. It has about 13000 employees. Alticor is run by the Van Andel and the DeVos family.

It was actually started in 1999 to be the parent company for various businesses, including a distribution and manufacturing company and Amway, the multi-level marketing company, and Amway Global.

The company also purchased Gurwitch products in 2006 and operated as a subsidiary until 2006 when Shiseido acquired it.

Are Amway products Vegan?

For a product to be recognized as vegan, all the ingredients used to make it has to be free from animal-derived sources.

This is not the case for Amway products as some of them have animal-derived ingredients or byproducts hence not 100 percent vegan.

You should also note that some vegan products can also not be cruelty-free. A product could have no animal-derived ingredients, but it is not cruelty-free when the final product is tested on animals.

When buying any product, it is important to have a look at the ingredient list and see what it consists of. Look out for cruelty-free certifications from trusted animal rights organizations such as Leaping Bunny and PETA.

Summary

Amway makes amazing products, but their animal testing policies are not favorable. It is not fair for animals to suffer in cages and labs just to make sure that a product is safe for us when there are alternative methods.

We think they should reconsider their animal testing policy or refrain from selling their products in China until the animal testing laws have changed.
